Team Spirit:
1986

The Korean War is often referred to as "The Forgotten War". Overshadowed by the Vietnam War, it is only remembered through reruns of *MASH*. Most Americans do not know when the Korean War began (June 25, 1950) or that it has never ended. No peace treaty has been signed, no one has surrendered, and American troops are still stationed in South Korea, ready to help defend against any North Korean attack.

Every year in March, the joint Allied forces engage in military exercises to show the North Koreans that we are still ready. Often, around that time of year, you will hear much rhetoric from the North Koreans on the evening news channels. Though you will not hear that this rhetoric is in response to the South Korean military exercises, the sabers are still rattling.

In March 1986, I went to South Korea as a military consultant during one of these military exercises, known as Team Spirit. My intention for this site is not to give you a technical account of the military movements, but rather to give you the flavor of South Korea during Team Spirit.
